Mustard seed oil, for making soap and cosmetics. Very good hair soap oil.

Mustard oil, its pungent essential oils make it a powerful healing oil. It only develops its effect in water; without water it is a cooking oil like any other.

MUSTARD OIL CONTAINS MANY FATTY ACIDS AND ALSO ESSENTIAL OILS

Mustard oil is made from the cold-pressed oil of mustard seeds. The seeds and grains contain essential mustard oils, which give the mustard a spicy taste. These essential oils are also found in horseradish, radishes and cress.

The mustard plant originally comes from Asia and came to Europe in the late Middle Ages. Mustard oil is still a widely used cooking oil in India today. Traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda , also uses the pungent essential oils in mustard oil for healing massages.

The mustard oil itself is not spicy and even tastes a bit bland. Only when mixed with water does it produce the typical spicy taste that we know from mustard .

Mustard oil contains a variety of fatty acids:

  • It consists mostly of monounsaturated fatty acids.
  • But it also contains essential polyunsaturated fatty acids – both omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid) and omega-3 fatty acids . Both together are important for a healthy immune system.

However, mustard oil also contains the controversial fatty acid erucic acid. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) warns of possible heart disease with higher concentrations of erucic acid in cooking oil, as well as in rapeseed oil . Specially bred mustard and rapeseed plants contain less erucic acid and are considered safe for consumption.

When buying, make sure that the mustard oil is approved as a food in the EU. The EU only allows mustard oils with a high erucic acid content for external use. You can buy organic mustard oil from Germany or Austria in well-stocked organic markets. Or you can order online from organic oil mills, such as Ölmühle Solling , Ölwerk or from ** Amazon .

MUSTARD OIL: EXOTIC COOKING OIL WITH MANY BENEFITS

You can use mustard oil in the kitchen like any other cooking oil. It can withstand high temperatures very well, so you can use it for frying or deep-frying. However, the heat causes the essential mustard oils to break down and the oil loses its spiciness.

Unlike olive oil , for example, mustard oil only produces gases that are harmful to health at temperatures of around 250 degrees. This smoke is suspected of being carcinogenic.

  • Indian curry dishes in particular get their typical taste from mustard oil.
  • The cold oil gives sauces or dips a spicy note.
  • Mustard oil exerts its healing properties primarily when water releases the essential oils in the oil.

You can use mustard oil externally for massages, baths, foot baths or wet compresses.

The effect of mustard oil:

  • strengthens the immune system and acts against bacteria, viruses and fungi
  • promotes blood circulation and warms the skin
  • relieves muscle tension
  • has an analgesic effect
  • clears the nose and allows you to breathe better
  • clears the bronchi of mucus
  • stimulates the appetite
  • Promotes digestion of fatty foods
  • stimulates the bladder

MOIST MUSTARD OIL COMPRESSIONS HELP WITH COLDS AND MUCH MORE

With moist compresses made from mustard oil, you can help your body to cope with illnesses more quickly.

The mustard oil can make the skin red, feel hot or tingle. This is because the skin has a lot of blood flow. If the skin itches uncomfortably or even swells, remove the compress immediately.

1) You can treat colds specifically with neck or chest compresses. At the same time, you inhale the essential oils from the moist compress. Your nose will clear and the mucus in your throat or bronchi will dissolve.

  • Take an espresso cup with mustard oil and warm it in a small saucepan until it is about lukewarm.
  • You can add two drops of essential oils, such as thyme or sage, both of which complement the effect of the mustard oil.
  • Dip a dampened linen cloth (you can use a clean kitchen towel) in the oil and wrap it around your neck or chest. Place a dry towel on top.
  • When using a breast wrap, protect the sensitive skin of the nipples with a cotton pad or a thick, greasy cream.
  • You should leave the wrap on for about 15 minutes to half an hour.
  • Lie down and relax, then wash off the oil with a mild soap.

2) You can rub painful joints caused by rheumatism or inflammatory arthritis with a mixture of mustard oil and chilli paste . The pack relieves the pain and increases blood flow to the tissue. The inflamed joint heals better. Use fresh chillies from the organic market.

Before you prepare a large amount of the paste, test whether you can tolerate this mixture. To do this, apply some chilli paste with mustard oil to the crook of your arm. If the skin swells and stings unpleasantly, your skin is reacting allergically.

  • Puree enough fresh chili peppers with mustard oil so that you can rub the joints with a thickness of about a finger. The paste should be creamy so that it doesn't drip down.
  • Cover everything with a dry cotton cloth.
  • Leave on for about half an hour and then wash off thoroughly with warm water.

3) Liver wraps with mustard oil stimulate liver function. This allows your body to break down fats and waste products more effectively. You can also use the liver wrap if you want to give your body a rest during a fasting cure to cleanse itself.

  • Heat mustard oil in the amount of a small espresso cup (as described above).
  • Soak a damp linen cloth with the oil and fold it so that it fits snugly on your stomach under the right rib cage.
  • You can increase the effect even further with a hot water bottle.
  • Wrap a dry towel over it.
  • It's best to lie down for half an hour and give your body a break.
  • It is best to apply the liver wrap after the main meal.

MUSTARD OIL – THE BATH OIL FOR HEALTH

You can also add mustard oil to your bath water or use it for invigorating foot baths.

For tub baths, add one to two cups of mustard oil to the water; for a foot bath, add about half a cup.

1) Baths with mustard oil:

  • If you have a cold, you can also inhale the essential oils in the bath water. After the bath, your skin will be slightly red and warm. Wrap yourself up warm and go straight to bed. You will "sweat out" the cold overnight.
  • In the case of muscle tension or soreness, the increased blood circulation transports the waste products away more quickly and supplies the muscles with blood. The pain subsides.
  • In case of back pain, the spicy essential oil can relieve the pain.
  • If you are feeling depressed or have poor circulation , a hot bath can be invigorating.

2) Foot baths with mustard oil:

  • A foot bath has a stimulating effect on tired feet .
  • In the case of nail fungus, mustard oil can kill the fungal spores – if the fungus has infected the fingernails, bathe your hands in mustard oil.
  • If you have pain in your toe joints or hammer toes (hallux valgus), a foot bath can relieve the pain.
  • Mustard oil keeps you beautiful
  • The linoleic acid in mustard oil is also a component of the skin, which means that the skin absorbs the mustard oil easily during a massage. The linoleic acid in the skin cells regulates the fat and moisture balance. After a massage with mustard oil, your skin looks fresh and rosy.

Traditional Indian beauty care uses cotton stamps for massage. The moist cotton cloths are filled with medicinal herbs and soaked in mustard oil.

    1) Mustard oil massage for cellulite:

Mustard oil can help against cellulite . The essential oils in mustard oil warm the skin and promote the removal of waste products. If these substances remain in the skin layers, they cause the typical dents.

    • Apply mustard oil to the thighs and massage the skin with wet brushes. Use soft natural hair brushes for massage.
    • After about half an hour of massage, wash off the remaining oil and apply a nourishing oil, such as birch oil.

    2) Hair treatment with mustard oil:

    • If your hair is dry and brittle, massage mustard oil into your dry hair and scalp. The linoleic acid oils provide moisture and make your hair softer and shinier. Your scalp will be more moisturized and less tight. Wrap a towel around your head and leave the oil on overnight. In the morning, wash the oil out with a mild organic shampoo .
    • If you have thin, limp hair, massage your damp scalp thoroughly with mustard oil and then wash it out immediately. The essential oils in mustard oil increase blood flow to the hair cells in your scalp. Your hair will grow back stronger.
    • You can also use mustard oil if you have fungal infections on your scalp or if you notice bald patches (alopecia areata). However, be sure to talk to your doctor about using mustard oil.
